Building on the experiences and rhythm of the Africa Internship and blessed with McBride Ranch and the Elk Mountains as our classroom, the Colorado Internship focuses on finding inspiration and guidance through an unfiltered connection with nature and insightful discussions with local environmental leaders.
During the week, interns will have the opportunity to:
- Spend early mornings and evenings quietly exploring and observing the remote corners of the McBride Ranch.
- Learn about resident elk populations and migration patterns alongside biologists from the CO Department of Wildlife.
- Witness climate impacts and discuss advocacy in the high country with the Wilderness Workshop.
- Study the beauty, fragility, and flow of our most important resource - water - and how the law is addressing societal demand with a water lawyer versed in the Colorado River Compact.
- Spend evenings around the campfire with other inspiring leaders and storytellers examining the larger social and environmental themes and narratives at play.
- Bring lessons of systems ecology, local leadership, and community conservation from Lewa to our own backyard.
- Engage the imagination as we explore new ways of addressing the balance between humans and the natural world.
The Colorado Internship is designed to deepen appreciation for the landscapes surrounding our valley; to broaden the perspectives and leadership capacity of Lewa alumni; and discover ways individual skills and interests intersect with protecting places we love.
Strong stewardship is built through personal connections
