1. Tell us why you would like to join the 2026 McBride Internship in Africa. We want to learn about you and why this experience is important to you. *

2. The McBride Internship challenges you to observe African wildlife closely and identify things large and small on this unique landscape. In Africa you will be asked to integrate your observations with what you already know and will be called upon to share your thinking with your peers. Write about an experience in the world of nature when you observed things closely. We would like you to describe specific details as well as the essence of the objects of your attention. Be clear. Have fun. We’d like to know something about the way you think. *

3. The McBride Internship requires that you give up your digital devices such as smartphones and the internet for twelve days and nights. 1) What do you think that will be like for you? 2) What is the value in going without electronic communication? 3) Why might this be difficult for you? *

4. We want to know about the thing or things you are interested in. Tell us about your interests or passions and just as importantly tell us why you’re interested. We expect to learn something important about your values and what makes your heart sing. *

5. What do you do with your free time? If you suddenly have a whole day to yourself and nothing that you have to do, what would you do with that time? What would you do to take advantage of a full, unscheduled day? We hope to learn something about how you direct your own life. *

6. We spend 12 days in Kenya doing everything together as a group. There will be opportunities for you to journal on your own, sit quietly and observe from a wildlife blind, or the boundary of our campsite, however, most of the time you will be with seven other high school students, Dominic our Kenyan guide and Molly and Aaron. Share with us an experience you’ve had that is comparable to this and how you handled it. *

7. Tell us the something about the contribution you'd like to make in the world. It doesn't have to be anything earth-shattering but we're interested in knowing how you'd like to have an impact. *

8. Africa? Are you serious? What about this trip is going to be difficult? How do you handle the odd bug falling into your soup? How do you handle sitting quietly and paying attention for long periods of time? How do you handle living closely with people who are different from you? How do you handle being asked to think deeply about new and unfamiliar things? Describe the things you think will be most challenging for you and explain why. *
